Savannah by Land

If you are visiting Savannah/Tybee and have a car, please check out our vast beaches on Tybee where the sun is invariably shining. Our lighthouse has a beautiful view of the island and is open most days of the week. The Savannah/Tybee area includes much of the rich history of the southern United States from the Indian oyster piles (their garbage piles, which now make up the ruins of the old tabby buildings!) through the landing of the Spaniards, colonial English, the export trade of cotton from Georgia (including the downtown Factors Walk), the American Civil War, and all the way to present day commerce.

For those who just want a quick water trip that is absolutely free, the county/city runs a ferry service downtown on the waterfront (River Street). This service ferries people across the Savannah River to Hutchinson Island (which includes our Trade Center and the Westin Hotel) and back. It is a wonderful, quaint way to get the kids on a boat for a short duration and open their world, all for free!
